James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) Author, Educator, Lawyer, Diplomat, Songwriter, Civil Rights Activist. First African-American Executive Secretary of NAACP. Wrote "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing". Served as US Consul for Venezuela and Nicaragua from 1906-1913.
Nathaniel "Nat" Glover (1943- ) First African American Sheriff in Florida since the end of Reconstruction. Sheriff of Jacksonville 1995-2003. Served as 29th President of Edward Waters College
George Crockett, Jr (1909-1991) Member of Michigan House of Representatives 13th Dist. (1980-1991). First African-American lawyer in US Dept. of Labor. Served as Chief Judge in Recorders Court. Civil Rights Activist. Was personally involved in MS search for murdered civll rights workers, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner.
Beatrice "Bebe" Ross Coker (1935-) Educator, Playwright, Civil Rights Activist. Worked for peaceful desegregation of schools during 1970-1980s. Recipient of John H. Taylor Education Leadership Award. Founding Director of the Black Heritage Educational Theater Group.
Lt. Col. Samuel Washington (1933-2014) U.S. Army. Helped establish the FAMU Navy ROTC program.Served as Associate Vice President of Student Affairs at FAMU.
Al Denson (1942-) Former All-American football player at FAMU. Played professionally for eight seasons with Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings.
Dr. Barbara White (1942-) First African American Dean at University of Texas(Austin) from 1993-2011. Served s President of National Assoc. of Social Workers and the Council on Social Work Education. Recipient of "Significant Lifetime Achievement Award in Social Work"
George F. Knox, Attorney, Legal Professor, Businessman, Community Leader. Founding partner of the Knox Firm in Miami, FL. Designated a "Legal Legend" by Maimi 11th Judicial Circuit Historical Society. Visiting Faculty Member at FIU College of Law. Director of Non-Litigation Advocacy Programs.
Willye F. Clayton-Dennis (1926--2012) American librarian, Civil Rights Activist, Florida State Legislator. First African-American Chief of Children's Services for the Jacksonville Public Library System. Served two terms for the 15th District of FL State House of Representatives.
Rev. Dr. Randolph Bracy, Jr. (1946-) Dean and Dsitinguished Professor, School of Religion at Bethune -Cookman University. Retired Founder and Pastor Emeritus, New Covenant Baptist Church, Orlando, FL. Has preached on every inhabited continent in the world.
Edward Orval Gourdin (1897-1966) Olympian, Harvard Scholar, Brigadier General, State Supreme Court Justice. Silver medalist in 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, France. Admitted to Massachusetts Bar in 1925 and Federal Bar in 1929. In 1958, was the first African-American appointed Massachusetts Superior Court Judge.
Eartha M.M. White (1876-1974) & Clara White (1845-1920) Humanitarians, founders of Clara White Missions. Clara White began feeding the hungry in the 1880s and later established Clara White Mission kitchen with daughter, Eartha, which still operates today.
Bill Lucas (1936-1979) First African-American General Manager in Major League Baseball for Atlanta Braves (1976-1979)
Rutledge H. Pearson (1929-1967) Civil Rights Activist, Educator, Negro League Baseball Player. Served as President of both local and state branches of NAACP and led the Jacksonville civil rights efforts. Played professional baseball with the New York Black Yankees and the Birmingham Black Barons.
Adolphus "Al" Frazier (1935-2018) Professional football player as halfback for Denver Broncos in the American Football League
Dr. Marilyn Madry-Lightfoote (1944-2017) First African-American doctoral graduate in Molecular Immunology at University of Virginia. Her research led to the discovery of the HIV virus prior to it being identified as an epidemic.
Charlie "Hoss" Singleton (1913-1985) Songwriter. Wrote over 1000 songs and produced a number of platinum albums. Co-wrote lyrics for "Strangers in the NIght", "Moon Over Naples" aand "Spanish Eyes".
Camilla Thompson (1922-) Educator of math and science in DCPS. Historian of African -American history in Jacksonville. Wrote over 500 articles published by Jacksonville Free Press newspaper.
Dr. Charles B. McIntosh (1926- ) First African-American pediatrician in Jacksonville, second in the state of Florida. Recipient of the Certificate of Merit-highest award given by the Florida Medical Association. UF Health C.B. McIntosh Center dedicated in his honor.
Dr. Leroy Polite (1944-) Entrepreneur, Dentist. Successfully owned two pharmacies before becoming a dentist. Established Economy Dentures and Economy Dentistry dental offices throughout Florida. Owns Affordable Medical Dental Supply Company (AMDS) and the Academy of Removable Prosthetics and Implant Dentistry (ARPID)
Rev. Dr. Robert L. Mitchell (1935-) One of the first African-American PhD graduates in educational administration at Florida State University. 24th President of Edward Waters College. Served as Chair, Commission on Colleges and Schools, 11th Episcopal District of the AME Church.
Dr. Alvin G. White (19--2016) Educator, Administrator, Sportsman. One of the first African-American Area Superintendents for DCPS. Adjunct Professor at FAMU and Nova Southeastern University. Director of the Schoolof Education at jacksonville University. Inducted into the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame and Gallery of Distinction for Education.
Alex Brown One of the first African-American stuntmen in Hollywood. Member of Black Stuntmen's Association. His work is found in over 30 films, including The Color Purple, Glory, Devil in a Blue Dress, Coming to America, Night of the Comet, Halloween, Dirty harry, Earthquake and Blazing Saddles.
Charles "Boobie" Clark (1950-1988) NFL Football Running Back. Played eight seasons. 1973 UPI-AFC Rookie of the Year. Played with Cincinnati Bengals and the Houston Oilers.
Bettye Hayes Sessions (1934-2017) Educator, Author, Editor and Publisher. Received Master's degree from Jacksonville University. Known throughout Jacksonville community through over 30 years in education with DCPS and civic activities.
Dr. Beatrice Denefield-- Board Certified Psychiatrist and Neurologist in Baltimore, MD. Work in medical field spans over 40 years. Served as professor at Coppin State University. Helped found the Center of Emotional Health at Total Health Care.
Dr. Marvin Grant--Educator and Administrator. Served as Vice-President of Academic Affairs at Jarvis Christian College, Texas College and Edward Waters College. Tenured Professor of Education at University of North Florida. Retired Professor of Education at University of West Alabama. Named "Outstanding Academic Affairs Administrator in Louisiana" while serving as Associate Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs at Southern University. Twice named "Outstanding Black Educator in Florida Higher Education."
Dr. Norma Solomon White (1934-) Retired educator and 25th International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. First female member of FAMU's Marching 100 Band. First feale band director in Jacksonville. Served for 37 years in DCPS as Asst. Principal, Magnet Coordinator and Music Supervisor. First Legacy International President in the 101 year history of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. First African-American EVE Award recipient in the Fine Arts.
Harold Hart (1952-) Football Running Back. Played for Oakland Raiders, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Giants
Rev. Dr. Rudolph McKissick, Sr. --Pastor Emeritus Bethel Baptist Church. Served over 48 years in the ministry. Served on the first Board of Trustees at the University of North Florida and Board of Trustees of Edward Waters College for 30 years. Former President of the pastors Conference of the National Baptist Convention. Former President of the Baptist Ministers Conference in Jacksonville.
Padrica Mendez -- Opera Singer, Actress, Fashion Designer. Earned a Fulbright Scholarship to study opera in Italy. Her singing career in Europe included opera houses in Rome, Toscano, West Berlin and Vienna. Traveled with Alvin Ailey in Austria, Switzerland and Germany. Featured actress in three Italian films.
Sen. Arnett Elysus Girardeau, Sr. (1929-2017) Dentist and Politician. First African-American Senate Pro Tempore. Served in both Florida Senate and House of Representatives. Led civil rights movements in community. Inducted into the Florida Civil Rights Hall of Fame in 2017.
