Historic Stanton, Inc., formerly Florida Institute, is the fiduciary for 1.5 acres of school property, bounded south by Ashley St, west by Broad St, north by Beaver St and east by Clay St in Jacksonville, FL. The land was bought for $850 on February 8, 1868 by former slaves organized as an "Colored Education Society" after the Civil War ended on April 9, 1865. This property was covered by Warranty Deed to C. F. Chase, I. L. F. Garvin, and Edwin M. Randall, trustees of the Florida Institute.
On May 23, 1914, the Circuit Court of Duval County appointed nine trustees to manage the school and its property. They included Robert B. Archibald, S. H. Hart, A. L. Lewis, J. W. Floyd, W. L. Girardeau, I. L. Purcell, B. C. Vanderhorst, J. E. Spearing, and W.H. H. Styles. Archibaid and Hart resigned and were replaced by J. M. Baker and L. H. Myers.
Over the years, past trustees include: W.D. Sweet, F.D. Richardson, A.H. Moore, E.M. Johnson, A.E. Girardeau, C. Simmons and R.W. McKissick. Two of the current trustees have been on the Board of Trustees for over 40 years: R.L. Mitchell and C.B. McIntosh.
